The Feminine Critique

Susan Vreeland

Susan Vreeland graduated from San Diego State University, and has lived in San Diego since she was twelve. She taught high school English in the San Diego Unified School System since 1969, and ceramics since 1986, retiring recently after a 30-year career.

Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. There are only 35 known Vermeers extant in the world today. In Girl in Hyacinth Blue, Susan Vreeland posits the existence of a 36th. The story begins at a private boys' academy in Pennsylvania where, in the wake of a faculty member's unexpected death, math teacher Cornelius Engelbrecht makes a surprising revelation to one of his colleagues. He has, he claims, an authentic Vermeer painting, "a most extraordinary painting in which a young girl wearing a short blue smock over a rust-colored skirt sat in profile at a table by an open window."
The Passion of Artemisia by Susan Vreeland. In her luminous debut novel, Susan Vreeland told the story of a Vermeer painting that transformed the lives of its many owners with its beauty. Now, in her stunning new novel, she tells the story of a painter who transformed Renaissance Italy with the beauty of her work. The Passion of Artemisia chronicles the extraordinary life of Artemisia Gentileschi, the first woman to make a significant contribution to art history.
